Declassified satellite images of the newly discovered Roman forts show the forts served as hubs for caravan trade, troop movements, and communication – not barricades to keep invaders out.

Until now, historians had been aware of only about 100 Roman forts in this region, dating mainly from the second and third centuries A.D. These forts were believed to represent a defensive line against the Persian threat and nomadic tribes.According to Jesse Casana, an archaeologist at Dartmouth College and lead author of the study, the traditional notion of these forts as border defenses is fundamentally flawed.

“If he’d flown his biplane everywhere, he would have found a lot more forts— but he didn’t have the capability or the technology to do that at the time,” Casana told
