Cold temperatures are making flooding less likely in Utah — for now

Cold weather that’s bringing rain and still more snow to Utah is also making it far less likely that there will be any flooding over the next few days.

On Tuesday, the National Weather Service canceled its flood advisory for Emigration Creek. And the forecast for the water flow in the creek is well below both the flood stage and the action stage and trending down. A peak of 90 cfs is expected on Wednesday, dropping to the 80s, 70s and 60s for the next week.

That’s because cold temperatures are slowing the melting of Utah’s record snowpack. In the Salt Lake City area, high temperatures in the low to mid-40s are expected on Wednesday and Thursday; the upper 40s and low 50s on Friday and Saturday; and the upper 50s to low 60s on Sunday and Monday.Overnight lows in the 30s are expected, falling to the 20s in some areas. Normal low temperatures for this time of year are 42-43.

There’s a 40% chance of snow showers on Wednesday night, and a 50% chance of more snow on Thursday. Accumulations of 1-2 inches are possible in some areas. The danger of flooding around the state has not passed, however. As of Tuesday, just 10% of the state’s snow water equivalent had melted,
