Brutal cold continues across New York City and the Tri-State area, with bone-chilling wind chills dipping as low as 5 to 10 degrees below zero in some spots. Cold weather advisories remain in effect, with frostbite possible on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.
While daytime temperatures may briefly approach the freezing mark this week, strong winds are making it feel far colder. Black ice, flurries, and another potential blast of Arctic cold heading into next weekend mean winter hazards are far from over.Melting snow and rock salt knock out power for hundreds More than 1,200 Con Edison customers are without power in Brooklyn on Sunday morning. The outages are being reported on the border of Park Slope and Boerum Hill. Con Edison says melting snow mixed with road salt made contact with underground electric equipment. Crews are now working to make necessary repairs as quickly as possible. Meanwhile, snowpack on the ground that's covering several manholes is delaying power restoration.The record for consecutive days at or below freezing in Central Park is 16 days, set in 1961. Given the long-range pattern, we could be approaching that mark by mid-February. The prolonged cold is due to a Greenland block, a weather pattern in which high pressure over Greenland disrupts the jet stream. When temperatures spike well above normal in that part of the world, the atmosphere compensates by forcing Arctic air south - and that's exactly what's happening here.Following a water main break overnight in the Morrisania section of the Bronx, DSNY crews, DEP workers and NYPD officers responded to the scene.
