ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Storm systems to the south, cold air to the north, and Alaska is stuck in the middle with this winter mix. Moisture and snowfall return to Southcentral Alaska on Saturday. Very cold, even dangerous wind chills will impact the northwest, to the Dalton Highway and north to the central and eastern Beaufort Sea coasts.
An advisory for wind chills 45 to 55 degrees below zero will encompass the Seward Peninsula, precisely the area Iditarod teams are going to be traveling through in the coming weekend. A wind chill warning goes through the weekend for wind chills to plummet to 75 to 80 degrees below zero. Wind chills this low are considered very dangerous. Exposed flesh can freeze quickly. Another area of the state seeing heavy amounts of snow is the northern Panhandle. Haines reports 9 to 12 inches of snow.
