New study showed no increase in mortality risk or disease severity in adults with tick-borne coinfections.

Conducting the study was essential because of the rise in tick-borne infections, said lead author Paddy Ssentongo, MD, of the Division of Infectious Diseases and Epidemiology, Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, Pennsylvania.

Ssentongo said he was somewhat surprised by the increase in new babesiosis cases per year and by the high rate of coinfections with other tick-borne illnesses, including Lyme disease and anaplasmosis.infection rate in the United States has been rising over the past decade at a rate of at least 9%, Ssentongo toldinfection does not travel alone,” and clinicians should be aware that 4 in 10 patients are coinfected with other tick-borne diseases, each requiring a different treatment, he said.

The study’s major limitation was the inability to analyze the data separately by state or county, which could have shown hot spots for infection, Ssentongo said. “Another limitation is the lack of blood parasitemia , which could have been used to determine the severity of the disease,” he noted. “Since more of the population is experiencing tick-borne infections, it is important to be aware of the outcomes when tick-borne coinfections are involved,” said Mazumder, who was not involved in the current study., anaplasmosis, and ehrlichiosis did not have a higher mortality rate or more severe disease, Mazumder noted.
