'It does feel like a dream,' Gauff said of Wimbledon. 'But I’ve kind of moved on, and I’m focused on (the Citi Open in Washington, DC).'
Andy KostkaWASHINGTON — During Venus Williams' first-round match at Wimbledon earlier this month, her final return crashed into the net. Williams' opponent, Cori"Coco" Gauff, put her hands on her head in disbelief.
On Friday, she announced she made it into the qualifiers, spots handed out based on ranking . She’ll begin her post-Wimbledon career Saturday at Rock Creek Park Tennis Center, eager to build off her success in England. And as she looks back on where she was last year — preparing to play in the Junior U.S. Open — the meteoric rise has been a whirlwind. The off-court life can almost be as daunting as the matches. It’s a tough transition to navigate for a newcomer, said Frances Tiafoe, who ranks No. 41 in the world and will compete at the Citi Open as the No. 16 seed.
"I knew exactly what she was going to go through," Tiafoe said."I was happy to send her that message. I mean, I’m not saying she listens to me. Obviously, she’s got game. She did her thing. But it was unbelievable to see it and unbelievable to be a part of."
