Coco Gauff's quest for a Wimbledon title came to a heartbreaking end on Centre Court as she fell to Karolina Muchova in a dramatic three-set semifinal that culminated in a tense 10-point tiebreak.
The 22-year-old American, who had entered the tournament as the highest seed remaining after several upsets, was aiming to become the first American woman to win Wimbledon since Serena Williams in 2016. Muchova, at 29 the oldest semifinalist in the women's draw, produced a performance filled with resilience and tactical brilliance to secure a 6-2, 1-6, 7-6(10) victory in two hours and 33 minutes.
The match was a rollercoaster of emotions, with both players exchanging momentum swings before Muchova eventually prevailed in a tiebreak that had the crowd on the edge of their seats. The opening set was dominated by Muchova, who capitalized on Gauff's slow start. The Czech player broke early and raced through the first set in just 39 minutes, winning five consecutive games to take a decisive lead.
Gauff, visibly frustrated, left the court for a brief reset before the second set. She returned with renewed intensity, breaking Muchova twice and leveling the match with a dominant 6-1 second set. The third set was a tense battle, with both players holding serve until the very end.
Gauff had a key opportunity to break Muchova at 5-5, but a controversial moment occurred when a BBC audio mishap accidentally broadcast commentator Clare Balding's voice saying, 'Right, here we go, she's gonna break here,' potentially distracting the players. Muchova held, sending the match into a 10-point tiebreak. In the tiebreak, Muchova quickly established a 4-1 lead, showing signs of discomfort as she frequently grabbed her abdomen.
Gauff fought back to level at 6-6, but a crucial double fault from the American handed Muchova a 7-6 advantage. The drama escalated at 8-8 when Muchova received a time violation warning and then hit long, giving Gauff a match point at 9-8.
However, Gauff squandered the opportunity with a poorly executed drop shot that hit the net. Muchova capitalized, taking a 10-9 lead with a lob, and despite slipping on her own match point, she recovered to force a Gauff error on the final point. Muchova's backhand down the line forced Gauff to net a forehand, ending the American's hopes.
The loss means Gauff will have to wait another year to add Wimbledon to her Grand Slam collection, which already includes titles from the French Open and US Open. Muchova advanced to her second Wimbledon final, where she will face either Ons Jabeur or Marketa Vondrousova
