While cochlear implants are not a new technology by any means, as Lynott explained, the technology has evolved over the past four decades

"We first discovered it when I was six years old," she said. "It was just something I accepted because it didn't hinder me much."

Key criteria, as audiologist Abby Stevens explained, is experiencing hearing loss which is not as well remedied by hearing aids, which can mean the cochlea is not effectively processing and filtering sounds and frequencies. "The ear transduces sound into an electrical impulse," Robbins said. "There's an ability to discriminate sounds. Sounds like 'that,' 'mat,' 'rat'; they all have to sound different whether we yell them or whisper them. People we're dealing with have lost that discriminating ability and turning up the volume doesn't help at all."

"It gave me a very realistic expectation," she said. "Just to see other people’s stories has been really helpful.” "It was honestly a breeze," she said. "To this day, when I look at the incision, I’m amazed how small it is. It hurt more to get my wisdom teeth removed than to get a cochlear implant surgery.”
