Coca-Cola is introducing a new line of its iconic soft drink sweetened with cane sugar, responding to consumer demand for healthier alternatives and President Trump's advocacy for real sugar.
Coca-Cola will introduce a new version sweetened with cane sugar in the United States this fall. The announcement came during the company's earnings call on Tuesday, just days after President Donald Trump, a known Coca-Cola enthusiast, stated he had discussed the use of 'REAL Cane Sugar' in the drink with company executives. This addition aims to expand the company's product portfolio, providing more choices for diverse occasions and preferences.
The new formulation will coexist alongside Coca-Cola's original recipe, which utilizes high-fructose corn syrup for sweetness.Historically, Coca-Cola sold in the U.S. has primarily been made with corn syrup, a decision partly influenced by government subsidies for corn producers following a surge in sugar prices during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Additionally, high-fructose corn syrup is generally more cost-effective to produce. The Trump administration's 'Make America Healthy Again' initiative, spearheaded by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has encouraged food and beverage companies to revamp their products and eliminate ingredients deemed unhealthy by the White House.Coca-Cola isn't the only soda brand venturing into new territory. Pepsi recently unveiled plans to launch a prebiotic cola. This drink is touted to contain 30 calories, 5 grams of cane sugar, and no artificial sweeteners. Ram Krishnan, CEO of PepsiCo Beverages North America, stated, 'Pepsi Prebiotic Cola represents the next leap forward in giving consumers choice, optionality and functional ingredients in their cola experience, without sacrificing the iconic Pepsi taste we’re known for delivering.' The beverage will become available online this fall and in retail stores in early 2026
