Opinion: Coastal Commission blocks development

We have criticized Huntington Beach’s City Council for obstructing the construction of new housing, for which it was sued in March by Gov. Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Rob Bonta. But in 2021 the council did approve the Magnolia Tank Farm, with 250 homes and a 215-room hotel. As the Register reported then, the development includes parks, retail space and restaurants, and is supported by local officials, businesses and labor leaders.

A new snag comes from the California Coastal Commission, which at its July 13 meeting postponed approval of the project. “The impacts of climate change are just as critical if not more than trying to address housing in our housing crisis,” said Commissioner Justin Cummings. “The last thing we want to do is put people in harm’s way.”

Postponing or rejecting the project out of vague concerns about potential problems that might not manifest for decades is just a hollow excuse. Mitigation efforts can take place if they’re actually necessary. Moreover, if in a worst-case scenario the site does have to be vacated, this is a private project, with owner Shopoff Realty Investments at risk, not the taxpayers.
