According to the Coast Guard, the 31-year-old man was climbing with a friend when he fell at about 5:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Rescuers with the Coast Guard, National Park Service Rangers and the Alger County Rescue 21 team all were involved in the search, which included the use of an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter.

However, poor weather hampered efforts and prevented an ice rescue team from launching, the Coast Guard says. A helicopter search continued into the evening Tuesday and resumed Wednesday morning but the missing man, whose identity has not been released, could not be located. The Coast Guard is warning people that even with highly specialized safety gear, activities around ice and cold water remains dangerous. Although most of Lake Erie remains ice-free, the water temperature is 33 degrees near the Cleveland shore, according to the National Weather Service., a person in water ranging in temperature of 32 to 40 degrees can swim for about seven minutes before exhaustion sets in.
