The U.S. Coast Guard intercepted a panga-style boat carrying 16 illegal migrants off the coast of Mission Bay, California. All migrants were transferred to U.S. Border Patrol custody. This operation highlights the ongoing efforts to secure maritime borders and combat human smuggling.
The Coast Guard intercepted a boat carrying 16 illegal aliens approximately 15 miles off the coast of Mission Bay in California on Sunday morning. At around 12 a.m., the cutter Active alerted the Joint Harbor Operations Center about a 25-foot panga-style vessel with an estimated 15-20 individuals on board, located about a mile south of their position. Pangas are narrow, high-bowed boats frequently used by drug and human smugglers. The cutter Active and a U.S.
Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Air and Marine Operations boat crew dispatched boarding teams to evaluate the situation. During the investigation, the Coast Guard boarding team discovered 16 immigrants aboard the panga. Initial interviews with the immigrants revealed that they all claimed to be from Mexico. All immigrants were subsequently turned over to U.S. Border Patrol custody. 'The Coast Guard remains dedicated to safeguarding lives at sea while collaborating with our federal partners to combat illegal maritime activities,' stated the Coast Guard. 'These operations underscore the collaborative efforts between agencies to fortify our maritime borders.' Last week, the U.S. Coast Guard conducted several 'alien expulsion flight operations' between California and Texas, which included intercepting a boat carrying illegal migrants that was sinking in U.S. waters.A photograph released by the military branch on X depicted crews aboard the Active intercepting a vessel carrying nine illegal migrants headed for San Diego. 'The migrant vessel began to sink shortly after the Active crew halted its voyage,' the post explained. 'All individuals aboard the sinking vessel were safely evacuated and transferred to CBP.' Fox News Digital initially reported that President Donald Trump dismissed the commandant of the USCG, Adm. Linda Lee Fagan, due to concerns regarding border security, recruitment, and an 'erosion of trust.' Officials alleged that Fagan failed to adequately address border security threats, provided inadequate leadership in recruitment and retention, had an excessive focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, and concealed Operation Fouled Anchor, which was the Coast Guard's internal investigation into sexual assault cases at the Coast Guard Academy.
