The barges broke away after leaving the McAlpine Lock and Dam around 4 p.m., US Coast Guard Inspection Division Chief Steven Matthew said.Matthew said 10 barges broke free. Eight of those were initially resting on the L&I Railroad Bridge and two are partially submerged by the lower dam gates near the LG&E hydroelectric power plant.
The Coast Guard has issued a Special Marine Information Broadcast to mariners, however, boat traffic has not been officially shut down as there are no vessels in cue, according to the release. The lock chambers at McAlpine Locks and Dam are currently closed to traffic due to the accident.
