The Coalition has marked the first anniversary of the failed Voice referendum by renewing calls for a 'forensic audit' of spending on First Nations programs, citing concerns government funds are being wasted.

The Coalition has marked one year since the failed Voice referendum by renewing calls for an audit of spending on Indigenous programs, citing concerns government funds are being wasted on initiatives which"simply aren't improving" outcomes.

Following a long and draining campaign, which saw both sides accuse the other of sowing division and failing to listen to the will of Indigenous communities, Australia overwhelmingly voted against the Voice to Parliament on October 14 2023. Picture: Martin Ollman/Getty Images "We need an audit to ensure that we are investing in things that are actually effective. Too much money is being poured into programs and organisations that simply aren't improving the lives of Indigenous Australians. That money could and should be redirected into those that have proven measurable outcomes."

"We are listening to the call from traditional owners who have expressed a desire to form breakaway land councils. We are already actively investigating what it would look like to form smaller, language-based land councils," she said. "Today is not a celebration or a victory lap but a reminder of one key tenet; all Australians are equal, no matter your race, your religion or creed. We all have an equal voice in Parliament, through 226 Members of the House of Representatives and the Senate.
