CNN faced a significant decline in viewership last month, despite major news events such as the Los Angeles fires and a presidential inauguration. AdWeek reports that CNN 's primetime viewership dropped by 14% year-over-year, with a 5% decrease in the key demographic. Total day viewership also saw a decline of 9% overall and 7% in the demo. MSNBC fared even worse, with primetime viewership plunging by 33% and 41% in the demo. Total day viewership dipped by 34% and 42% respectively.
Conversely, Fox News experienced a surge in viewership, with primetime viewership jumping 40% and 61% in the demo. Total day viewership also saw an increase of 53% and 70%. Despite all three networks improving on December's holiday-dampened viewership, Fox News dominated January's top 15 shows, claiming 14 spots. MSNBC's Rachel Maddow managed to secure the 14th position with 1.711 million viewers, a respectable showing but a far cry from when she competed with Fox News for the top spot. CNN's highest-rated show was anchored by Jake Tapper, who averaged only 638,000 viewers.
