In computer security, it’s important that public and private sector customers know the boundaries between their computing infrastructure and services contracted to a cloud supplier. Vulnerabilities such as the chip flaws exposed in early 2018 can leave data in computer memory at risk and are more readily addressed by companies with server operating system expertise, Coekaerts said. “Both Microsoft and Oracle own an operating system, and we use that operating system in our clouds,” he said.
Panelists also addressed the Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure cloud computing contract the US Defense Department intends to award by April. The contract, which could be worth $10 billion over a decade, may be granted to a single company, which some technology suppliers say would favor Amazon Web Services.
