The Proteas suffered their first defeat of the Netball World Cup with a hard-fought loss against Jamaica in their Pool C encounter at the Cape Town International Convention Centre on Sunday.

It was a sold-out crowd, but the spirited crowd couldn't help the Proteas over the finish line as they lostJamaica proved their dominance from the start, leading in all quarters as the Commonwealth Games silver medallists kept possession and took a 32-26 lead at half-time. Goal shooter Lenize Potgieter competed in her first game of the World Cup after struggling with a mild niggle and proved why her capability quickly.The Proteas returned for the second stanza looking more depleted as they only scored three goals to Jamaica's 18 in the third quarter.

Silly mistakes were made and hasty throws were squandered by the Proteas as they trailed 51-29 with one final quarter to go. South Africa bounced back but couldn't stop the Caribbean side from scoring as the scoreboard sat at 67-49 at the end of the game.Meanwhile, Nichole Taljaard only made 11 out of 14 shots and Ine-Marí Venter made 8 of 9 shots. The loss sees South Africa finish second in Pool C behind Jamaica, who top the group.
