Dawes Eddy, an experienced climber who once reached the summit of Mount Everest, ended up stranded on San Ysidro Mountain in the Borrego Springs area after sunset

While stranded on a mountain near the western edge of Borrego Springs after sunset last week, 79-year-old Dawes Eddy sat on a rock in the cold and darkness for around four or five hours. He had no other option but to wait for the moon to rise and illuminate his path.

About 26 hours after he first started the mountaineering expedition, Eddy returned to the bottom of the mountain safely. The search-and-rescue team found him Wednesday morning. And he had to work around the prickly cacti and sharp agave plants that dot the mountain. “You couldn’t go in a straight line up the ridge,” he said.

The way down was slippery, because snow had fallen on the peak the night before. “I had to really watch my step,” he said.Meanwhile, sheriff’s deputies, the search-and-rescue team and State Parks rangers launched a search, with a sheriff’s helicopter and drone in the sky. From a distance, Eddy could see the helicopter, the drone, even searchers’ flashlights.

There was, however, a silver lining in the pitch-black: a stunning view of the sky, including what he thinks was a meteoroid.“I’ve been doing this for 40 years, and I know what my limits are and what my body is capable of,” he said. “I wasn’t really concerned.”
