A hiker was brought to safety after a 6.5-hour rescue in Little Cottonwood Canyon that started when officials said he was unable to safely descend.

They said the BASE jumper had been hiking across from the Gate Buttress and intended to climb the ridge separating Little Cottonwood Canyon from Bells Canyon, and BASE jump into Bells Canyon However, officials said he was unable to safely climb to the ridge and ultimately felt unsafe to move any farther.Four rescuers ascended the Black Pearl gulley, where several rocks as it was an area where a large natural rockfall occurred in 2021They said the rockfall hazard was significant enough that they decided to call for the Department of Public Safety helicopter to hoist the patient and all rescuers off the mountain and avoid descending back down the gulley.
