Currently, five candidates have filed to run for Bishop's seat, Senate Seat R.
Published: Jun. 3, 2024 at 5:06 PM AKDTFAIRBANKS, Alaska - There has been two 2024 election races in the Alaskan Interior that have shifted, as state Senator Click Bishop announced he will not be seeking reelection this year.
For 12 years he has served as Senator for West Fairbanks, along with a wide portion of Interior Alaska. That includes areas along the Alaska and Richardson Highways, as well as villages along the Nenana, Tanana, and Yukon Rivers. Shortly after his announcement, Fairbanks North Star Borough Assemblymember Savannah Fletcher, who previously ran for Mayor of the FNSB, announced she would be suspending that campaign and instead running for Bishop’s vacant seat.
She discussed the expanded powers state government has for fixing certain issues, saying, “At the borough level, we only have the power to give money or not give money to the school district, but we’ve seen the state implement legislation to hold better testing standards, to provide permanent education increases, to have a required local contribution or not. At the state level, we have the power to reduce our property tax load immensely, and I think people forget those different types of tools.
