David Gilbert, president and CEO of Destination Cleveland, noted that visitor growth in Cleveland in 2022 exceeded increases in both Ohio and the United States as a whole.
Lisa Quine works on her mural, "The Land Where Anything Is Possible", part of Destination Cleveland's latest city-wide project "Murals Across the City Project" which kicked off with the first two of six planned murals. This installation is located at 8004 Lorain Avenue in the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood.
Gilbert noted that visitor growth in Cleveland in 2022 exceeded increases in both Ohio and the United States as a whole. Ohio last year welcomed 233 million visitors, up 6% from 2021; meanwhile, U.S. domestic visitation grew 11% from 2021 to 2022. During the pandemic, cities typically saw a much larger drop-off in tourism, as travelers sought alternative, less-crowded destinations.
Attendance at convention center events hasn’t fully recovered yet either – the Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland welcomed 181,000 attendees in 2022, down from more than 350,000 in 2019. “That was a great audience of people to have in town -- young, influential business people,” said Gilbert. “We put in a lot of time and energy to make sure their experience here went way beyond the fact that they ate some meals here.”* 42% of visitors to Cuyahoga County were the highly sought overnight travelers, while 58% came in for the day.
