As it was, the third time was the charm to knock off the Phoenix in the biggest game of the year. The Vikings came together in the second half to build a lead the Phoenix could not overcome in the end.
Horizon League Player of the Year Destiny Leo was quiet in the first half, which opened the door up for one of the multiple playmakers in green and white to step up. The first was senior Gabriella Smith and her big night from beyond the arc. She was a huge factor in the second quarter when the tight game opened up for some breathing room for the Vikings. Smith dropped three straight triples to get the lead up to 34-26 in a span of 3 minutes.
The Vikings’ lead grew in the fourth quarter as Leo got more involved in the offense. Finding success attacking the basket and going to the free-throw line, Leo was 7 of 7 from the charity stripe and finished with 13 points.
