Under a recent deal approved by Cleveland City Council, city-owned Highland Park Golf Course in Highland Hills will be run by a local nonprofit foundation of enthusiasts and donors who aim to resuscitate the fortunes of the historic golf course through professional outside management and fundraising.
, and for a time, cleveland.com’s Robert Higgs has reported, was the home course of the late Charlie Sifford, “the first African American golfer to play and to win on the PGA tour ... [who] has been referred to as the Jackie Robinson of golf,” Higgs added. Made up of “local businessmen, frequent Highland Park golfers, and others who can help fundraise for course improvements,” according to cleveland.com’s Courtney Astolfi, the foundation now has a 20-year deal, with two five-year renewal options , to try to shed the red ink. That will begin with the planned hiring of the international golf management firm Troon to handle daily operations.
