Cleveland officials made a wave of changes Wednesday in the wake of what they said is an inability to discipline a police officer who made antisemitic social media posts.
Cleveland's Ismail Quran receives the Officer of the Year award during a ceremony in 2021. Officials said he will not be disciplined for antisemitic social media posts.CLEVELAND, Ohio —
“Antisemitism and bigotry are reprehensible and have no place in our community or our police department,” the statement said. “We have zero tolerance for hateful and dangerous rhetoric directed at our Jewish communities. Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association President Jeff Follmer said officials looked through every possible rule and found Quran violated no city policies.
StopAntisemitism Executive Director Liora Rez, a former Cleveland resident, said the organization appreciated the strong words from Bibb and Drummond but that they rang hollow without action. Rez called on the city to take back Quran’s 2019 “Officer of the Year” award. Anti-Defamation League Regional Director James Pasch said he is looking forward to partnering with Bibb’s administration.
The city also said it will require social media checks for all new hires, something that wasn’t in place until after Quran’s social media posts came to light via Canary Mission, an organization that seeks to expose antisemitism.
