The city of Cleveland is moving forward with plans to revitalize Canal Basin Park, located on the Cuyahoga River in the Flats. The project includes a riverside boardwalk, a river-themed playground, a renovated dog park, and native plantings. The design also pays homage to the park's history as the terminus of the Ohio & Erie Canal.

The City of Cleveland hopes to make Canal Basin Park, a place where people can gather and enjoy the river. CLEVELAND , Ohio -- The city of Cleveland is moving closer to making major changes at Canal Basin Park, including construction of a riverside boardwalk, a river-inspired playground, and a nod to history of the area, which was once home to the terminus of the historic Ohio & Erie Canal.

Cleveland is partnering with several entities to bring the project to fruition, including Merritt Chase, a Pittsburgh-based landscape and urban design firm. Nina Chase, the founding principal of the firm, told commission members that the vision for the park was first laid out in 2015. The design will also pay tribute to the Ohio & Erie Canal, which operated from 1827 to 1874, and ended at this point along the Cuyahoga River in what was called the canal basin. Chase said the design would incorporate a modern-day interpretation of the basin, by creating a pool-like storm water management system for the park in the same location where the basin once stood.

Some of those preferences included better connections to Cleveland’s trail network, family-friendly features and community events, and a celebration of the city’s history as a leader in the environmental movement, Chase said.
