Cleveland paramedics now have automated ventilators that can do the breathing for critical patients, and officials say the technology is already making a difference when patients need emergency care.

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland paramedics now have automated ventilators that can do the breathing for critical patients, and officials say the technology is already making a difference when patients need emergency care.

“As of November 17th, we have implemented automated ventilators to all of our ambulances,” said Commissioner Orlando Wheeler. According to Wheeler, the ventilators were used within the first six hours of being placed in the 25 front line ambulances. “When we utilized it for the first time and had a significant increase in the patient’s condition,” Wheeler said.EMS says every paramedic is trained on the new equipment. Sergeant of Education Rob Moyer demonstrates how a height-and-weight chart quickly sets the volume of oxygen. “5′5 female, 130 pounds, we have a chart right here that does the math for us, that is 340 ml’s,” Moyer said. Once entered, the ventilator accurately breathes for the patient and makes transport easier for people already ventilator dependent. It also replaces the manual bag used for decades. “If you could see that bag over there, that was our ventilator for the past 50 years, now we have something that is mechanical and hands free,” Moyer said. The $540,000 purchase was approved by city council last October, and isn’t the only upgrade made to ambulances this year, with the addition of whole blood to units in June.“No one should have to go without a ventilator, because it is essential to increase their chance of survival,” Wheeler said.26-year-old in custody after barricading inside Strongsville home
