Max Chernin, who grew up acting in Shaker Heights, stars as Leo Frank in the Tony-winning musical revival 'Parade' at Playhouse Square.

Updated: Jan. 28, 2025, 11:14 a.m.Max Chernin and company in the national tour of " Parade ," coming to Playhouse Square Feb. 4-23. CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Max Chernin grew up as a theater kid in Shaker Heights, acting and singing at Heights Youth Theatre, Stagecrafters Youth Theatre and Shaker Heights High School.

“It’s going to be so wonderful to have my family, teachers and a lot of my hometown friends see me do my thing.” Arden’s approach brings a sense of urgency and relevancy to the production by presenting the story in the style of a true-crime documentary, incorporating historical photographs into the production design. This immersive effect pulls the audience in, making them feel as though they are witnessing the heart-wrenching injustice unfold in real time.

“I can’t imagine what it must have been like to try to assimilate to that culture at that time,” Chernin said. “It’s an honor to shed light on his legacy, especially as a Jewish American myself.” That score, composed by Jason Robert Brown, strikes a balance between the pop sensibilities of contemporary musicals and the operatic roots of the genre, combining orchestral complexity with an emotional narrative. The result is “brilliant,” Chernin said.
