The City of Cleveland is vying to host the 2030 Special Olympics U.S.A. games, showcasing its world-class facilities, passionate community, and unwavering commitment to athletes with intellectual disabilities. The Special Olympics U.S.A. Site Selection Committee is impressed by Cleveland's offerings and its people's genuine pride in the city.

The City of Cleveland is making a strong bid to host the 2030 Special Olympics U.S.A. games, showcasing its world-class facilities and passionate community to the Special Olympics U.S.A. Site Selection Committee this week. The committee toured Cleveland and its potential venues, facing stiff competition from Nashville. The final decision is expected this spring. During a visit to Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, Governor Mike DeWine expressed his unwavering support for Cleveland 's bid.

He emphasized the city's and state's deep love for sports and their commitment to Special Olympic athletes. 'If you know Cleveland, if you know Ohio, this is a city that loves sports, this is a state that loves sports, but we also love our Special Olympic athletes,' he said. 'I think that combination coming together is a great reason, besides the great facilities you're seeing here today, great reasons that we're picked for 2030.'Gary Simaglia, Senior Vice President of Special Olympics North America and a member of the selection committee, was highly impressed by both Cleveland's infrastructure and its people. 'Above and beyond what we've seen so far is just the tremendous amount of pride in every one we've met and talked to,' Simaglia shared. Cleveland's success in securing major events in the past has been attributed to its enthusiastic community support. This time around, the city went public with its bid last September, encouraging residents to actively participate. They responded overwhelmingly, with over 10,000 volunteers already recruited five years in advance, surpassing expectations.David Gilbert, CEO of the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission, highlighted the unprecedented financial commitment from local corporations, exceeding $10 million in fundraising. 'They did; we've already recruited over 10,000 volunteers five years out, which is what they need. The money raised already from corporate leaders around this community over $10 million is unprecedented,' Gilbert stated. 'It shows an extreme commitment from this community at all levels for how important it would be to have the Special Olympics here.' Hosting the games would bring over 5,000 athletes, coaches, and officials, along with 10,000 friends and family members, to Northeast Ohio for over a week, generating a $70 million economic impact. However, the benefits extend far beyond the economic sphere. Jessica Steward, CEO of Special Olympics Ohio, emphasized the lasting social impact the games would have, changing attitudes and perceptions towards individuals with intellectual disabilities. 'I have heard people say, 'Where has this been all my life?' This is authentic, this is a real sport, and this has really changed who I am as a person, and I think that's the power of what we can do here at U.S.A. Games in Cleveland and in Ohio in 2030,' she said. Local Special Olympian Sophie expressed her excitement for the opportunity to showcase her home state to the world. 'I want to bring more people to Ohio to see what we're all about and that we have major teams, that we have all of these attractions like Cedar Point, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,' she shared
