The city of Cleveland will consider adding the portion of Gordon Park that’s south of the Shoreway to the city’s long-term lakefront lease with the Cleveland Metroparks. The plan is set to be introduced Monday to City Council for consideration.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The city of Cleveland will consider adding the portion of Gordon Park that’s south of the Shoreway to the city’s long-term lakefront lease with the Cleveland Metroparks.Gordon Park is a city-owned park that was sliced in half by the construction of the Shoreway. The northern portion that runs along Lake Erie was part of a 2013 deal that saw the city lease its lakefront parks to the Metroparks for 99 years.

“There’s so much potential that can be realized,” said Councilman Anthony Hairston, whose Ward 10 includes Gordon Park. Hairston told cleveland.com that his goal is to make sure Gordon Park maintains its identity as a neighborhood park and doesn’t transform into a lakefront destination that fails to attract and serve nearby residents. Today, he said, the park is “heavily” used by neighborhood residents, who are often found there meeting with community groups, playing baseball or just taking in the scenic views.

Hairston noted ongoing struggles the city faces in maintaining its parks and other properties and how well the Metroparks has maintained and operated other city-owned lakefront properties, including Edgewater and Euclid Beach parks.
