Some of the films to be shown at the 17th Cleveland Jewish FilmFest include "Remembering Gene Wilder," "Yaniv" and "Irena's Vow."will showcase 34 films from 11 countries during its 11-day run from Oct.
12-22. Presented by the Mandel Jewish Community Center, the 17th annual event is meant to bring the best of international Jewish and Jewish-themed cinema to Northeast Ohio. “Each year we look forward to sharing a captivating selection of award-winning films with our community,” said Deborah Bobrow, director of arts and culture at the Mandel Jewish Community Center, in a press release. “This year’s lineup will not disappoint, with a myriad of thought-provoking films from all genres that offer unique perspectives. The festival creates opportunities for filmgoers to have meaningful dialogue around interesting topics as well as explore cultural and historical themes.” “Remembering Gene Wilder” kicks off the festival with an opening night screening at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History on Oct. 12. The documentary explores the life and career of the legendary comedic actor with classic clips and new interviews with Alan Alda, Mel Brooks and more. Films will also be screened at the Cedar Lee Theatre, Cinematheque at the Cleveland Institute of Art, the Maltz Museum, Mandel JCC and Silverspot Cinema at Pinecrest. Some films will be available to stream at home, too.• “Culture Fix CLE: Healing Our Community through the Arts” - This locally directed documentary short about an Israeli street artist will be part of the shorts program at the Maltz Museum. • “Women of Valor” - An Orthodox woman takes her fight for female representation all the way to the United Nations and Israeli Supreme Court in this documentary. Refreshments and film schmooze follow at Heights Arts. • “Amen-Amen-Amen: A Story for Our Times,” - A Q&A will follow this documentary about a custom-made Torah scroll created in Israel in honor of the founding father of the United Arab Emirates. • “Yaniv” - Beachwood natives Amnon Carmi and Benjamin Ducoff direct a drama about two high school teachers who infiltrate an underground card game run by Hasidic Jews. • “Irena’s Vow” - Fresh off its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, this drama tells the true story of a Nazi officer’s Polish nurse who secretly smuggled Polish Jews out of the ghetto and to safety. • “Israel Swings for the Gold” - This documentary, about the Israeli baseball team’s first Olympics in 2021, will be screened for free at the Mandel JCC. Tickets for individual screenings are $12-$14 except for the opening night and reception, which cost $25. Streaming prices are $15-$20 per household.
