Cleveland will celebrate two completed projects on the near West Side on Saturday.
CLEVELAND, Ohio — Two big projects are set to be unveiled on Cleveland’s near West Side Saturday -- a newly renovated park in the Stockyards neighborhood, and a public-art project that created murals and sculptures strewn across the Clark-Fulton area.
Both events are set to take place at about the same time, with Storer Park’s ribbon-cutting set for 11:30 a.m., while the Art Garden Festival starts at noon at the corner of Storer Avenue and West 50th Street. Storer Park has undergone a $350,000 redesign that includes a recreational field, along with a new trail around the perimeter of the park that leads into a new play area and shaded picnic area, according to a press release. In the future the city plans to repair the sidewalks leading to the park, add new fencing and plant more trees to extend the park’s natural canopy. “The new Storer Park demonstrates the power of community partnership and shared vision,” said Councilwoman Jasmin Santana, who represents Cleveland’s Ward 14. “Together, residents and the City of Cleveland have created a safe, beautiful space where families, friends and neighbors can come together.” The nearby Art Garden Festival will feature a live mural painting, music and local food vendors. The event celebrates a project from artist Ariel Vergez, meant to create new public art across the Clark-Fulton and Stockyards neighborhoods. Cleveland will do a live mural painting at the Art Garden Festival on Saturday. A white outline gives a glimpse of what's to come.Funded by $394,000 grant from the city’s Transformative Arts Fund, the Art Garden project includes 10 new murals and three new sculptures across the Clark-Fulton and Stockyards neighborhoods. Vergez worked with local kids and residents to co-create the art pieces, meant to restore the rich heritage and artistic potential in an area that has long carried the weight of disinvestment, according to the project’s summary. The artwork is meant to bring color and life to walls “once weathered by time.” Each mural is different, like the art painted on the side of the Zubal Books store, titled “famous piece of literature,” which has scenes from novels like The Great Gatsby, Romeo & Juliet and Harry Potter. The Transformative Arts Fund, created with $3 million from the American Rescue Act Plan, provided grants to support seven projects in Cleveland. Kevin Conwell, who chairs council’s arts committee and helped push for the funding, said he’s happy to see these art projects come to fruition. “We need the arts, and we’re going to build the arts up in the community,” Conwell said. “And I’m very happy for our neighborhoods.” This Cleveland councilman is accused of threatening to kill a staffer, but most of City Council won’t publicly condemn himThree newcomers battle for open Cleveland Ward 7 council seat If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.and agree that your clicks, interactions, and personal information may be collected, recorded, and/or stored by us and social media and other third-party partners in accordance with our
