In becoming the first municipality outside the City of Cleveland to contract with the Peacemakers, the federal grant will also free up funding also available through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).
The federal grant award makes Cleveland Heights the first municipality outside the City of Cleveland to partner with the Peacemakers Alliance. It will also free up some of the funding being requested through the American Rescue Plan Act , with the Coventry Village business district -- shown here during its Sept. 30 street festival -- among those seeking a pandemic recovery and relief allocation.
The city will also become the first outside Cleveland to partner with CPA, whose highly-regarded programming also came with a strong recommendation from Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School Superintendent Elizabeth Kirby. “The Cleveland Heights Police Department will partner with CPA to provide teens and young adults opportunities to practice non-violent conflict resolution skills and redirect violent behavior,” the press release noted, with Seren adding that while law enforcement remains essential, police officers can’t do it all.
“Our goal is to look at the drivers of violence and how to turn away from the perception that violence is the only option,” Watkins stated in the press release. “We deter conflicts with on-time remediation and interventions that will help young people in Cleveland Heights to stay in school.
