CLEVELAND, Ohio - The naturalization ceremony that kicked off the Cleveland Cultural Gardens’ One World Day on Sunday summed up the spirit of the festivities. “America is a nation of immigrants,” Judge J.
Philip Calabrese told a crowd of 100 or so gathered in the morning rain, as they watched more than two dozen people officially become United States citizens. The ceremony is the first major event of this year’s One World Day, the annual festival now in its 78th consecutive year, that’s held by and within the Cleveland Cultural Gardens on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and East Boulevard. “It celebrates the best of us,” Sheila Murphy Crawford, a past president of the Cleveland Cultural Gardens, said at the ceremony. The new U.S. citizens hail from countries like Brazil and Ghana, Somalia and Bhutan, the Dominican Republic, and the Philippines. Now, they can sign up to vote in United States elections, and most are expected take advantage of this opportunity. As one participant in the naturalization ceremony explained to his child: “All the people here are trying to be citizens of this country, just like me.” One World Day is akin to an international festival that Cleveland Cultural Gardens President Dr. Wael Khoury said showcases all of Cleveland’s international “cultural flavors.” Those flavors have the chance to show off during the Parade of Flags later in the day. It marches throughout the meandering gardens along MLK Jr. Drive, where 52 communities, including those represented in the gardens and those that are not, put their culture and heritage on full display through traditional clothing, music and dance. In what other parade can you hear Scottish bagpipers and Korean drummers, see traditional Mexican and Chinese dancers, and admire traditional garb from Iran and Croatia? Side by side, in one huge celebration, they march through Cleveland’s gardens.The gardens have seen renewed interest and growth in the last decade, with this past year alone seeing a number of developments, including the dedication of the Most recently, two additional gardens have been greenlit to begin development: a Palestinian garden and as of this past Monday, a Bangladeshi garden, said Lori Ashyk, executive director of gardens.
