Sports columnist Terry Pluto and reporters Jake Zuckerman and Kaitlin Durbin have been honored by the 2024 National Headliner Awards.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Longtime cleveland.com/The Plain Dealer columnist Terry Pluto, a go-to read for fans of Cleveland sports, won first place for sports feature writing from theCleveland.com/Plain Dealer reporters Jake Zuckerman and Kaitlin Durbin also are honored with National Headliner Awards.

Zuckerman was awarded second place in environmental writing in a top 20 news market for his reportingIn regard to Pluto, judges said: “Sportswriters become more than the voice of their city’s fans — they become the heart of the fans, the conscience of the fans and the memory of the fans. Terry Pluto of The Plain Dealer fulfills that mission.Pluto, 68, spent years with the Akron Beacon Journal before joining The Plain Dealer/cleveland.com in 2007. He is a member of the Cleveland Press Club Journalism Hall of Fame and has been named Ohio Sportswriter of the Year eight times by the National Sports Media Association.Zuckerman covers state government and policy, including the massive HB6 corruption scandal. He has been working as a journalist full time since 2016, and covering Ohio politics since 2020. He previously has won awards for coverage of a pattern of excessive force from the West Virginia State Police department and on Ohioans who violently stormed the U.S. Capitol in 2021.Plain Dealer in 2021 after working for nine years in Mansfield, Toledo and Colorado Springs, Colorado. She previously has been honored for her coverage of children being housed at the county’s social services office building. The National Headliner Awards program is one of the oldest and largest annual contests recognizing journalistic merit. It was founded in 1934 by the Press Club of Atlantic City and its first awards were presented in 1935.
