Cuyahoga County officials haven’t publicly disclosed locations they’re eyeing for a new county jail, but Cleveland already seems to be mounting opposition against one of the top contenders on the county’s “short list” of favorites: Garfield Heights.

His concerns included the potential loss of tax revenue for the city as well as the burden a move might have on families, the majority of them from Cleveland, who will have to travel farther to visit loved ones in jail. He said the residents he represents in Ward 9, covering most of Glenville and part of University Circle, tell him they oppose the move.

Conwell and Councilman Richard Starr, who represents Ward 5 covering Central Cleveland, Slavic Village and parts of downtown, are attending Tuesday County Council meeting to ask their counterparts at the county directly not to relocate the jail to Garfield Heights. Conwell’s wife, Yvonne Conwell, is a county councilwoman representing District 7.
