Mayor Justin Bibb began vetting new sites after backing away from plans from former Mayor Frank Jackson to build a new headquarters on Opportunity Corridor.
at 2530 Superior Avenue as its preferred site for the future Cleveland police headquarters, according to a Tuesday afternoon announcement.
Cleveland officials say that renovating the ArtCraft building will cost $40 million less than pursuing the Opportunity Corridor plans, and will also get police into their new headquarters up to two years quicker. A news release states that Cleveland police are expected to be in their new home by early 2025.
“This site presents the best combination of location, timing, functionality, and cost while meeting the needs of our Division of Police,” Bibb stated in the release. “I appreciate the hard work and due diligence of the team to ensure we deliver on this important project.” The 250,000 square-foot building is expected to undergo a “gut-rehab renovation.” The city plans to install all new building systems, a roof, parking garage and floorplan, with “the flexibility needed for all CDP functions today and into the future,” the release said.
Operations housed in the current headquarters -- which is leased space inside the county-owned downtown Justice Center -- would transfer to the ArtCraft building, as would operations currently housed at Cleveland’s Public Safety Center at 2001 Payne Avenue. If you purchase a product or register for an account through one of the links on our site, we may receive compensation.
