ICYMI: With a dominant fourth quarter, the Cavaliers capped the first half of the season with a 112-98 win over the reeling, short-handed Phoenix Suns. It’s Cleveland’s fourth win in the last five games.
Phoenix didn’t have Chris Paul , Devin Booker , Cameron Johnson and Cam Payne . Because of those absences, Bickerstaff was concerned about an emotional letdown -- something that has happened multiple times throughout the season when the opponent has been without any of its star players. The Suns made seven of their first eight shots. They scored 16 points in the first four minutes. It was the exact formula for a vexing road slip-up.
That early surge allowed Cleveland to seemingly take control of the game -- until late in the third, forcing the Cavs to dig deep once again and respond like one of the league’s contenders. “We did all the little things necessary to go out there and win and I think that’s great to see from the sideline and having guys continuously lift the group up no matter who is out there,” Mitchell said. “That’s the sign of a team that’s really trying to excel at the highest level. You saw our intensity take another leap and that’s what we’ve gotta do all four quarters.
Mitchell and Darius Garland scored 22 points apiece. Isaac Okoro and Evan Mobley each chipped in with 14. Jarrett Allen finished with 13 points, 12 rebounds and five assists. The Cavs have reached the halfway point of the season with one of the NBA’s best records. It hasn’t been easy. They’ve been tested, especially on the road. But they’ve responded each time. The Cavs will continue their five-game road trip against the Utah Jazz on Tuesday night. Tipoff is set for 9 p.m.
