Cleveland Ballet’s first show of its 2022-2023 season is a beloved classic -- “Swan Lake,” Tchaikovsky’s tragic love story based on timeless, fairytale archetypes.

Typically, “Swan Lake” is performed in four acts, lasting a total of two-plus hours. But Cleveland Ballet artistic director and choreographer Gladisa Guadalupe has arranged this version to be friendlier to a busy modern audience without compromising anything. The performance will have two acts and last about one hour and 45 minutes.“I chose ‘Swan Lake’ because it is a love story,” says Guadalupe. “The cast needs to be strong technically as well as artistically.

This classical ballet premiered in 1877 at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. Tchaikovsky, who also wrote “The Nutcracker,” became well-known internationally for his popular appeal. His works, while classical, are accessible to and appreciated by the general public, not just the artistic elite. Alas, Odette is cursed by the evil sorcerer Baron von Rothbart to be human only between midnight and daybreak. The Prince’s love can free her from the curse.

The Cleveland Ballet is in its 8th year of growth under the artistic direction of co-founder Guadalupe. The company includes 32 professional dancers from nine countries. To cast enough swans, the show tapped dancers from the affiliated Cleveland School of Ballet’s trainee program. The role of Odette and the evil Odile is performed by guest dancer Ana Sophia Scheller. The Argentinian-born Scheller was formerly a principal dancer with both New York City Ballet and San Francisco Ballet.

The male lead, Prince Siegfried is performed by Canton native Zachary Catazaro, a former principal dancer of the New York City Ballet.
