The smoke from the Canadian wildfires continues to create poor air conditions in Northeast Ohio.
Stagnant air has allowed the smoke to linger over Northeast Ohio for the past several days. But relief isn’t too far away. Cincinnati, Columbus and Toledo all have seen conditions improve dramatically, with air quality now at healthy levels.
Mike Griffin, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Cleveland, said the wind picked up in those areas and cleared out the smoke. But that could change by this afternoon and evening, when winds are expected to finally start get strong enough to start pushing the smoke out of the region, Griffin said. There also are chances of showers and thunderstorms tonight and through the weekend ... another plus for improving air quality.
Formaldehyde can cause respiratory symptoms and eye, nose and throat irritation, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. “At this time, we don’t have a sense of the formaldehyde levels, so we don’t know if the formaldehyde levels are particularly high compared to the other pollutants,” Keisha Williams, a toxicologist at EGLE, tells The Post.
