Isaiah Simmons didn't need a second attempt at the 40-yard dash.
The 6-4, 238-pound Clemson linebacker made quite the statement Saturday at the NFL scouting combine, clocking a 4.39-second mark. He opted not to run again after his first attempt.
Simmons' finish was second-best of any linebacker at the combine since 2003, when when data-tracking for the event began, behind only former UCF standout Shaquem Griffin . For comparison, no running back notched a faster time than the one Simmons registered, with Wisconsin's Jonathan Taylor being the lone ball-carrier to equal the mark. Only four wide receivers this year were faster.
"Linebackers playing man on running backs. The game's no longer a 250-pound linebacker, it's more guys that can run side to side and are able to cover. It's just such a necessity now with the tight ends and running backs."
