Clear Lake girls survive pressure to reach Region III-6A soccer tournament
Clear Lake's Mia Brumlow and the Lady Falcons will take on a tough Ridge Point team Friday in the Region 3-6A girls soccer tournament in Deer Park. One would think the Clear Lake girls soccer team should specialize in avoiding penalty kicks.
Last Friday, it was Mason who produced the game-winner after the Lady Falcons and Summer Creek waged a scoreless tie for 100 minutes in the regional quarterfinals. “We went into PKs the game before Summer Creek, so I knew I was going to be the sudden-death kicker if we needed it,” she said. “Just watching, I was super-stressed through the first three kickers .
Clear Lake coach Lisa Manis won’t confess to being an interested observer of soccer’s ultimate tiebreaker.“We practice PKs in order, and if it goes to sudden death, whoever is the strongest mentally going into that sixth PK will be shooting. I asked Meredith Mason if she was ready for this and she said, ‘I got it.’”
Clear Lake went through District 24-6A play with an 11-0-1 record, and its last loss was Jan. 14 to Cypress Ranch. The Lady Falcons have been so accustomed to winning since then that they’ve decided to make a habit of it.“She’s like our mom, honestly,” Heausler said. “She always keeps us together. Her main thing is that we all play for each other and work really hard on the field. Even if you do make a mistake, she tells us that someone always has your back.
