Cleanup is underway after an estimated 94 gallons of diesel fuel spilled at Naval Base Kitsap on Friday.
According to a news release from the base, the fuel spilled from a damaged pipe on a pier, which was reported at 9:30 a.m.
Those who responded for cleanup quickly stopped the leak and began mitigation efforts with the use of a containment boom. “As soon we were aware of this spill, the installation’s emergency response personnel immediately sprang into action to contain it, assess the situation and begin cleanup efforts,” Naval Base Kitsap Commanding Officer Capt. Richard Massie said.
Officials said a majority of fuel was cleaned up at the pier but there were approximately 20 gallons still in the water.The cause of the spill remains under investigation.
