Doyon Drilling Inc. reports significant progress in the cleanup of a collapsed drilling rig on Alaska's North Slope, with the removal of about 95% of the structure and the ongoing recovery of spilled materials. Two small fires were quickly extinguished during the cleanup, with no injuries reported. The company assures no immediate risk to surrounding areas.

NORTH SLOPE , Alaska - Crews have removed about 95% of a drilling rig that collapsed on Alaska ’s western North Slope , and cleanup work remains underway, according to Doyon Drilling Inc. The company said Friday that response efforts remain in the second phase of cleanup, which focuses on removing the rig from the tundra, disassembling the structure and preparing debris for removal and recycling.

Doyon officials say two small fires broke out March 21 and 22 during metal-cutting work on the east side of the rig, but both were quickly extinguished and no injuries were reported, the company said. Heavy shearing and welding work has since been completed. Crews have recovered about 2,585 gallons of spilled material out of an estimated 4,735 gallons, according to the company. Doyon said there is no immediate risk to nearby communities, infrastructure, air quality, drinking water, waterways, traffic or wildlife.Fairbanks’s Hungry Robot named in Guy Fieri’s top 6 pizzerias in AmericaTrump signs order to pay TSA employees after Congress fails to agree on DHS funding
