Dive Alaska organized another yearly dive to remove debris from the Whittier harbor.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -

The third annual cleanup by the organization, and the second year they’ve met in Whittier, brought in 125 volunteers according to Josh Braun, a training director with Dive Alaska. Braun said they’re still gathering data from this year’s event, but in the past volunteers have collected approximately 4,000 lbs. of marine litter.

“As divers we’re super passionate about keeping our waterways clean and having those pristine sites that we dive on all the time and enjoy,” Braun said, adding that because Dive Alaska uses Whittier as their main dive site for most of the year they like to take care of the area. Most of the litter gathered is usually commercial fishing gear, Braun said, followed by glass alcohol bottles.

Saturday’s dive was a community effort with multiple other agencies, both environmental and safety-related. Braun said they expect to have the official number of garbage collected within a week.Passenger jet with 64 aboard collides with Army helicopter while landing at Reagan Airport near DCASD budget shows district with deficit of millions
