Blackpool's 'clean air zone' idea will be the 'final nail in the coffin' for seaside town
Almost four years ago, Blackpool Council declared a climate emergency. The council said that they were committed to making the council’s carbon emissions net zero and using 100% clean energy across the council’s services by 2030.
The Labour councillor, who is standing in Talbot ward for re-election in May, said: “I want to reassure people that while this was a suggestion put forward at the Climate Assembly, it was dismissed by the executive. Terry Barlow owns a store on Corporation Street, right in the centre of town. He says a clean air zone would push people to shut up shop and open businesses elsewhere.
Manchester City Council's similar plans to introduce daily charges for taxis, vans, lorries, buses and coaches which do not meet emissions standards were put on hold one year ago. It followed a huge public backlash sparked by people spotting Clean Air Zone signs popping up across Greater Manchester towards the end of 2021.
