The newly formed Clay County STEM Alliance in Middleburg, Fla., has launched its first competitive robotics team, the 'Robo Runnerz,' under the FIRST Tech Challenge.

New STEM Alliance’s ‘Robo Runnerz’ to Compete in First Scrimmage Without Full Equipment SetRobot being displayed by U.S. Military at Creative Media ExpoMIDDLEBURG, Fla. — A newly formed nonprofit organization in Clay County is pushing forward with its first competitive robotics team, even as it works to secure essential equipment and funding.

The Clay County STEM Alliance launched its inaugural FIRST Tech Challenge team, dubbed the “Robo Runnerz,” who will participate in their first regional scrimmage this Saturday, September 27. The team is moving ahead with competition plans despite not having secured all their necessary equipment.“While we haven’t yet secured all the funding needed for our equipment, our students are demonstrating the true spirit of FIRST robotics,” said a spokesperson for the Alliance. “They’ll be there to learn from other teams, observe competition strategies, and offer assistance to fellow competitors.” The Alliance, which recently received 501 nonprofit status, aims to break down financial barriers preventing students from accessing STEM education opportunities. The organization launched its website at www.claycountystemalliance.org to facilitate community support through various sponsorship levels and volunteer opportunities. The Robo Runnerz, designated as FTC Team #32149, operates under a student-led model where participants handle all strategic planning, design decisions, and team operations. Adult mentors provide guidance and ensure safety but don’t direct outcomes. “These students are learning resilience, problem-solving, and teamwork – skills that will serve them throughout their lives,” the spokesperson explained. “Attending this scrimmage without full equipment might seem like a setback, but it’s actually a perfect learning opportunity.”Competition robot kit and field elementsThe organization offers various sponsorship levels ranging from $2,500 to $15,000, along with opportunities for equipment donations and facility support. Saturday’s scrimmage will be an all-day event open to the public. Community members interested in supporting the team can attend the competition or visit the Alliance’s website for information about sponsorship and volunteer opportunities. The Clay County STEM Alliance plans to expand its programs beyond Team Robo Runnerz, with future initiatives including programming workshops, maker labs, and community innovation projects throughout Clay County.
