After years of planning, construction is set to begin in early 2025 on Clay County's new animal shelter. The 35,000 square foot facility will be located at 20 Sleepy Hollow Road in Middleburg, offering improved access and community engagement. The new shelter will provide a more spacious and comfortable environment for animals, as well as expanded medical services.

“In the cases where we do have to take the animals in, it’ll be a much nicer environment for them to be in,” Hagan said. “It will accommodate a lot more staff, a lot more community engagements, and it’ll be a lot more beneficial to the animals that we have in our care.” The county has long outgrown the current shelter that was built decades ago. Green explained the challenges they face in the existing building and how the new facility will address these issues.
