The Australian actor and TV producer explains how her Bali upbringing, salsa, and a love for Sinéad O'Connor have shaped her career and attitude to life.
When Claudia Karvan landed at London's Gatwick Airport as a 17-year-old backpacker, she decided she was going to see Sinéad O'Connor."And I did!" says Karvan, who by pure chance, saw O'Connor at a stall in "Portobello Camden markets".
However, Karvan doesn't subscribe to the "woo woo" others may attribute to this singular experience of seeing one of their idols in the flesh. As a child, Karvan landed a role in the 1983 film Molly before earning breakthrough parts in 1990's The Big Steal and the 1993 film The Heartbreak Kid. But it was her roles capturing a coming of age in '00s dramas The Secret Life of Us and the award-winning Love My Way that solidified her as a small screen favourite.
"I'm quite a stubborn person and I could not get the beat. It just seemed so simple. I went to a few classes and fully humiliated myself," she admits.
