The Court has a credibility crisis, and corrupt behavior is its primary cause.
Until then, we hold this truth to be self-evident: Justice Clarence Thomas has managed to demolish the Court’s shrinking credibility with aand decades of deceit. If he wants to salvage any respect in the eyes of history, or to repair what damage he can, he should resign.
That conclusion has become unavoidable as each new revelation emerges showing how Thomas has grabbed astonishing gobs of money and gifts from a Republican megadonor with interests in court decisions, without disclosing it publicly. The size and frequency of these payoffs begs an obvious question: How can a man believe that he is bestowed with the wisdom to define the body sovereignty of women and affirm James Madison’s approval of assault rifles, but he doesn’t have the intellectual heft to fill out a financial disclosure form?
It is a rhetorical question. We understand Thomas is unlikely to step down because he has no shame, and he fears President Biden would choose his ideological opposite to fill his seat. Still, it needs to be said that a man of such dubious character does not belong on our highest court.
