Alabama farmers are facing several challenges right now including fuel price increases, rising fertilizer costs and weather hurdles.
WBRC visited Burnette Farms in Clanton which grows plums, strawberry’s, and of course those famous Chilton County peaches. “There’s sometimes I go in the field and I wonder, you know, what was my granddaddy doing back in this field?” said Jared Burnette , a fourth generation farmer.
He oversees 18,000 peach trees and says farming is rewarding but can come with challenges.The war in Iran is causing fertilizer prices and gas prices to rise. Burnette says they buy fuel in bulk, and regardless of cost, they will keep purchasing it for their tractors. “Well, if you can’t run it you aint going to have a crop,” he shared. “You aint got a crop, you can’t sell it. I got a family to feed too so, we got to take care of everything we got.”Burnette has his strawberry plants covered in white plastic in case temperatures dip.He also has wind machines to protect his peach trees. “The wind machines going to help pull warmer air out of the upper layer,” Burnette said. “It’s going to stir up air so no frost can land and kill anything”He urges Alabamians to shop local for fresher produce and to keep his industry strong.Suspect indicted in 2023 death of Montgomery musician3 bodies found in investigation of missing Choc family, Mobile County officials say
